Playing through Grim Dawn now and boy, if you haven’t played that yet highly recommend. I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of hope for this entry unfortunately. Just realizing that it’s over six months old gives me a lot of pause.

I think Torchlight as a series generates enough interest and players that the devs will hopefully be able to patch in a lot of content but I don’t think they could save this mess for at least another year or more of content. A lack of authored content is an instant turn off and when there’s nothing to like about a game narratively or in a range of features like previous entries it makes this a real sad clearly salvaged lump of useless product. Now Torchlight games have always featured a degree of random dungeon generation but it’s like they cranked it up to 11. The rest of the time the game literally looks and plays the exact same with almost nothing to do. It’s not until the last act that you see any map design that seems intentional. And when I mean ALL I mean every single one. Each campaign map is three areas linked by a single bridge with between one and three sub areas in it. This is what honestly made me the most upset. So this is all fine as long as the game can still get that core loot and dungeoneering down yeah? I’d say 90% of the fame upgrades are now dedicated to what are essentially vanity items. The rest of it is dedicated to the new fort mechanics - a home base with craftsble decorations and very few functional or meaningful buildings.

Unlocks include stuff like crafting materials and free gear. There’s 3 different base game Fame paths you can take and one seasonal one (Christmas for me). I hate battle passes but the impetus behind this one was a long term play. Instead of linear upgrades like levels, fame increases similar to a Fortnite battle pass. At first I thought I’d really like this change. Now gear has to have enchanting sockets to receive enchants. Not at all included anywhere in the game. Enchanting exists but isn’t unlocked until you beat the main campaign, which is easily a 15-20 hour grind. Nearly every system I just mentioned above is gone in Torchlight 3. Basically at almost any point in the game you’ve been able to highly customize gear and experience. The fame system, sockets and gems, fishing and pets, enchanting and dis enchanting.

Torchlight since it’s inception has included several ways to play and several ways to grow characters. To say nothing of what this entry clearly misses from the last entries. But maybe it was the boring way to tackle the game. It was by far the best and most consistent way of playing I found with the class.

I played as the train boy but maybe this is where I went wrong: I eventually uninvested my points from the train tree and just played as a ground slamming sword and board warrior type. The mage has a fun element switching mechanic which dictates the pace of combat and the ranger has a whole summoning tree that allows him to basically be a D2 style Zoomancer. The intended tank robot class has a chest gun that means he covers any range of combat. The warrior class has a unique pet that’s probably the coolest thing in the game - a train that gets more and more cars as you go along. Luckily the classes in Torchlight 3 are interesting. And for Torchlight especially the strengths existed in mechanic differences.

I love the mechanics of classes and skills and pets. Torchlight games are not something I ever really expect to play for the sake of a narrative conceit and the same goes for this entry. I saw some early reviews but figured it was still worth trying out.

I’ve beaten the first game and played over a hundred hours of the 2nd entry plus ARPGs are one of my favorite genres of all time (I’ve played most major entries in the genre). Basically ever since Torchlight 3 was announced I’ve been pretty hype.
